Kindness, Care and Community for Vulnerable Seniors.

Imagine living all alone, isolated and ageing in a rural community, with no living relatives. Imagine entering the final years of your life in poverty, struggling to prepare meals for yourself and to maintain your home. And imagine living like this after having survived a genocide that took your entire family from you; a crime that still traumatizes you today. This is the reality for many elderly widows, survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. It is a reality that we are determined to change.

We can’t do it alone, thanks for being generous.

Here is what your donation can help us achieve:

Your donations help to provide care packages 4 times a year for 27 vulnerable seniors. These packages contain rice, cornmeal, beans, soap, oil, sugar, salt and fortified porridge. The total quarterly cost is approximately $1300.00 CAD or $48 per person.

So you see, a donation, however large or small, can make a big difference in a Rwandan senior’s life; we and they are so grateful for that. Don’t wait, please donate!

Basic Life Support Program

Seniors Life Centre (SLC) seeks to meet vulnerable seniors’ basic needs with supports such as food, personal-hygiene items and health-care coverage. Health-care could include medical consultation fees, annual checkups, health assessments, treatment of acute illness, health information and education, diabetes and respiratory health programs, urgent care and the purchase of prescription eyeglasses, prescriptions and refills.

In addition, we are creating a health account to provide financial support in cases where treatment is needed and there is no other funding available.

Stay Healthy and Active Program

Social isolation and exclusion can be a significant issue for many seniors and can lead to negative health effects including depression and a reduced sense of well-being. Our Stay Healthy and Active Program consists of providing counselling and mental-health support to seniors and bringing seniors together in community to exercise, socialize and listen to stories and conversations from other seniors and volunteers.

Not only does this give seniors the opportunity to stay active, it also breaks the dangerous cycle of loneliness. In addition, active and healthy seniors are less likely to experience falls and dementia.

Seniors’ Lodge Program

Seniors Life Centre is raising funds to build a facility for underprivileged Rwandan seniors. Our plan is to build a permanent home for up to 200 seniors, where they will receive the highest standards of care, along with activities that enhance their emotional, social and physical wellbeing and give them hope for the future.

Eligible seniors will be provided with bed and sitting rooms, meals, housekeeping, recreational opportunities and other services. SLC’s commitment is to give these vulnerable seniors a family-like environment that promotes a meaningful life.
